let me explain my frustrations, lest they continue to seem merely ephemeral or petulant...

recent codices trended toward multiple avenues of anti mech(long fangs+melta, doa+melta, lance+speed+haywire, psiflemen+Str7 rend+volume...etc)

yet necrons...choke points on f o c , special character near requirements, firepower anti mech almost forced into retinue builds...that may suffer an f a q nerf to control and force certain purchases.

and then add in the marketing snafu .
diversity of vehicle units kneecaped by 'waves', and 1 of 3 potentially very key units only available 3 at a time with another purchase that may, or may not, be redundant (or completely not part of a desired build).

I get that there will always be 'more' efficient choices, but I detest said efficiency being so overwhelmingly weighted as to create little, or no, choice.
couple that with a complete marketing fail ...
and I'm pissed!
don't tell me I have to have something, and then make it nigh impossible to get.

Do you think that they are relying on the Gauss glance on a six? Maybe a sixth edition change to glances?

It's possible,
but a bump in the glancing results (most likely -1 instead of -2, if done) would KILL open topped vehicles...and would have the possibility of taking DE right out of any competition capability.

I'm griping, and I know it...but the marketing decisions relating to this particular 'dex, and the choices for waves, has me fit to be tied. Coupled with a seeming gimp of their (potential)anti-mech, and it's almost like a Tyranid treatment...which has me about as pissy.
I'm finding myself genuinely disliking one of my older armies...one that I have had since they were first introduced to the game (in one incarnation or another).

After the beautiful handling of my DE (both marketing, balance, and sculpting), a delivery that got me to re-invest in army wholesale (after abandoning them in the mists of 3rd ed due to a detestation of the bulk of the models), I can only bang my head on a wall at this stage.

The final nail in my frustration coffin? I can see the writing on the wall. The game has become so weighted toward MEQ with mech (or just Imp with Mech), that the pendulum is going to swing so far to compensate, we'll have another edition where only fools take Space Marines/IG to tourney, and all the top tables will be Eldar and CSM...like it was for nigh 8 years.
You think it's boring to see almost nothing but SW and GK (with a smattering of IG and some other SM variant) at the top tables? Wow, were those years some dull GT's...Victory Point-denial FTL...more annoying than all reserve lists (Daemons notwithstanding, they drop half right off the bat).
It would be fine to see Eldar and CSM on the top tables, IF it were a mixture of all, but GW never handles these things well.
Anybody remember the 3+ years of NOTHING but Eldar Mech followed immediately by Nidzilla (with a smattering of CSM).
I have all these armies, I'll transition fine from a tourney perspective...but the last time GW swung the weight THAT far they nearly went belly up, and in this global economy???

Thanks for the explanation EAP. And what better way to express your frustrations than here amongst brothers. Hopefully it doesn't swing that way and I remember when Eldar was everywhere.

I felt as though an explanation was necessary.

With the kid, and other work related frustrations, I have been...succinct?...without edited tact?...short...? with some of my discourse relating to this 'dex of late.

I have,
concerns...
and I am afraid, between this and other rumors, about the future of my hobby.
Coupled with what I perceive as a 'dropped ball' (regarding potential vs output) with Necrons, I'm frustrated.
By dropped ball I don't mean so much a 'duff' codex, though I don't think it's top tier, I mean the lack of tools and flexibility that are hallmarks of balanced and potent forces.
I am concerned that Necrons have the potential to go the route of Tyranids...nerfed, shoehorned into mono-builds, and eventually lost to the mists of 'who cares' (ie; key tyranid models/thunderwolves etc etc) when the next truly variable and diverse 'competitive' codex comes out.

I get that there will always be 'more' efficient choices, but I detest said efficiency being so overwhelmingly weighted as to create little, or no, choice.

I can understand this way of thinking. As a 'nids player, you won't get much sympathy but I seriously doubt you'll find many people not including the following in some manifestation in their Necron lists.

1-2 Surflords, Warscythe, Mindshackle Scarabs
1-2 (4-5man) Cryptek retinue, Lances, Pulse (x2ish)
2 (6-man) units of Wraiths with 3 coils, wound allocation tricks on the other 3.
1 (10-man) scarab unit
4 (5-man) warrior units

Just like the 'nids codex, we see the Elites section crammed full of win. We also see the HQ section maxed out. Some will prefer the Named Lords but those Silversurfers are just as sick. The troops section is complete crap for you, making a 3rd FoC slot a stain. Warriors can't fight in HtH on their own, can't DESTROY vehicles on their own, and therefore are regulated to grot squad status.

It is just sad, I feel ya. I think that people will become quite familiar with Necrons since they are so pigeonholed into most of the listed choices. Will it make them a bad codex? I hope not, though this type of anticipation stinks of Chaos Marine'esqe lists like Lash and Oblit spam and we all know how to deal with them...
