PostSubject: Challenges in 6th   Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:53 pm

I am slowly plowing through my 6th book and trying to absorb it all. When I read about challenges, I thought it was pretty cool and I liked it in Fantasy. They are not exactly the same BTW but still cool. I see a disadvantage to some of the lone models like the Hive Tyrant and the Daemon Prince. They are characters in 6th and subject to challenges. If you are a lone character, you must accept a challenge. Scenario...your big guy charges a squad of marines. The Sgt issues a challenge. The big guy has to accept the challenge and you waste multiple attacks on a W 1 chump and the rest of the squad lives another turn. Without the challenge the multiple wounds caused would be allocated across the squad.

Am I getting challenges correctly? Thoughts?

Correct as I read them.

Lone characters can tie a unit up or get tied up for a turn or two if there are multiple characters.

heavily defensive cheap characters can tarpit solos (stormshield sgts, etc)...and possibly cause them pain, if outnumbering sufficiently.

challenges are going to hamstring come combats, until we get used to them.

I wish 40K had over kill like Fantasy. You count all the wounds dealt in the challenge regardless of how many wounds the opponent had.

I was actually expecting something akin to that, when the rumours about challenges were beginning to solidify.
Either it was an oversight,
or it's reserved for certain pending characters (FAQ'd skulltaker, new Emp Champion, some such and so forth),
or was fully intended so that you COULDN'T afford to send IC's assassinating their way through entire units.
Unfortunately, it produced a result I find unsatisfying...or downright silly...
but meh, I'm playing the hand I'm dealt. Smile

no worse than some of the crap that's been floating around in 5e, just new crap! Very Happy
